HI GUYS I THINK IS TIME FOR A NEW POST HERE AT THE PILOS!!!
Image result for philosophy imagesImage result for philosophy images

We've been having a lot of grat comments in the PHILOSOPHY COMMENTS!!! secion, with mostly some anonymous guys going back and forth. We'bve have a write up on the Pilso Meta Meta Blog (and see some comments frtom there posted in the last post). We've also had some great comments!!!

A reflective poem

Going on the job market and the APA

Leiter reports and surveys every day
Moving up into the top journals for what I have to say
No one will read it anyway

Trying to negotiate the move with my spouse

Trying to get paid for adjunct work is such a louse
Getting sick of having to do phenomenology
Getting home to a wife and friend who's called Ben Holby

I cannot stress enough how good tenure could be

But in the present climate I've got social justice on my mind
Trying to announce conferences with a tear in each eye
Well, well, what a wonderful blog this could be

A pluralist undertaking in an experimental spirit

Won't you come with me? We will write it at Christmas
Then it can be read by the top 10 philosophers
Of mind, of biology, metaphysics and ethics
That's what I'm trying to do on my next visits

- Sunday, August 24. 2015. To my father.

SNEWS FROM LITER REPOST!

Virtual Dissertation Groups, Redux

Joshua Smart is organizing them again; he writes:
While advisors and committees are important, it can be incredibly helpful to discuss one’s work with peers in a lower-stakes environment, and it can be particularly enlightening to do so with those who take a different approach or have a different focus. Not only that, but there is evidence from psychological research that thinking about problems in relation to persons who are geographically distant can increase creativity. With students in programs from 8 countries and 20 different U.S. states, Virtual Dissertation Groups are a great (free!) way to capture some of these benefits.
The setup is simple: Students participate in three-membered groups, with one student each month sending a short-ish piece of writing to the other two for comments.
You can sign up to participate here. Open sign-ups go through Sunday, September 6th. (After that, spots are not guaranteed.)
THE ABOVE IS COPIED GFROM LEITWER REPOSRTS A PILOS BLOG IT IS NOT ORIGINAL META BLOG PILOS CONTENT!!!!

Whether And When To Flip Off Your Baby. August 26, 2015

Rebecca Schuman of Slate has been taking selfies while flipping off her infant.  She converses with Jill Delston of University of Missouri – St. Louis about the moral advisability of this.  It strikes me that analysis of how humor works might help here.  On Ted Cohen’s (fun) account of humor, one of the ways we find relief in humor is by mocking powers we cannot defeat.  That’s why jokes abo

  1. Seriously ... what the hell is going on over there?
  2. It's a beautiful conceptual art project I started to showcase the beautiful words, phrases and ideas which I found in the philosophical blogosphere. I think I would like to enjoy it more but I only have limited time. I write many of the comments myself but try to switch most of my brain off while doing it. Some of the comments are real though. It's a very beautiful project and it makes me feel very good inside!

I'd really love it if other philosophers started contributing more often! Also, feedback and suggestions for improving the site are very welcome! Thanks so much for your interest guys!
  3. This is my favorite (I'm not 7:44): "Big question in navigating the academic, particularly the philosophical, job market: are you going to succeed or not? My wife and I came up against this last year when we flew our kids out to public schools while trying to get into the Leiterrific top 100. Three publications and nine student evaluations later, we have finally got tenure. Thank God.

  • RHANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
  • ALSO.....
Interesting comments appearing at the weird, new Philosophy Metablog, not sure if it's sockpuppetry but either way it's ... food for thought?

  1. I have no idea what's going on there. It seems to be a (perhaps overlapping) combination of people who actually have jobs in philosophy and drooling idiots..
  2. Many of those posts, if not all of them, sound like they were written by the same person. And some of them have a kind of prose-y feel that suggests to me that they are not sincere comments.
  3. omg my eyes hurt.
  4. Why does prose-iness indicate a lack of sincerity, 7:43? And obviously there are drooling idiots who have jobs in philosophy, and non-idiots who don't, 7:42. But I don't know what's going on there either....
  5. How strange. What in the world is going on there? Any conspiracy theories?
  6. Evidence, 7:05?
  7. Evidence that something strange is afoot? Well, the weird and jarringly colorful page formatting for one. And the weird comments for two. It's like a joke that is... not funny. Or maybe I'm missing something?
  8. Someone you look up to made it, 7:57. Now what!?
  9. Maybe they got hacked, or maybe we're getting trolled. Hope it's the latter.
  10. 4:07, are you 7:57?
  11. So amazing. This looks exactly as insane and ugly and stupid as the profession feels. The fake comments are surreal and hilarious, like a game of philosophy blog mad libs. I don't know if the creator is seriously ill or a genius, but I love it and want to read more. I can't remember the last time I experienced so much actual joy over something related to this profession. Oh, wait, I can: never.
